The Devon coast near our cottage
Our part of South Devon covers one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the UK from Dartmouth to Plymouth. Much of the coastal area is owned by the National Trust and designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We are near the South West coastal path with exhilarating cliff top walks and beaches.
BEACHES
There is always plenty to do, you can walk the coastal path or take a dip in the sea at the sandy bay at Bovisand 10 minutes walk , even enjoy a rock pool ramble or surf at the Wembury Marine Conservation centre which is just five minutes drive away or a fifteen minute walk.
Wembury Bay has a National trust Old Mill cafe, a romantic cliff top church and island just offshore called the Mewstone.
Along the coast to the East is the Yealm estuary and yachting haven of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo. You can catch a small passenger ferry from the Wembury side of the Yealm estuary to Noss Mayo during the summer by waving to the ferry man from the landing stage!
PLYMOUTH
To the West is historic Plymouth Sound, with the majestic Hoe, numerous harbours and restaurants. Plymouth is one of Englands largest cities with all the attractions to match, including a major producing Theatre and National Marine Aquarium. Restauarnts of note include the Tanner brothers (TV Chefs) two restaurants and soon to be open River Cottage canteen owned by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. This will be in the fantastic 18c Royal William Yard, where the Navy made its food supplies.
BOAT TRIPS
There are numerous daily boat trips you can take to explore Plymouth Sound from the Mayflower steps on the Brabican, from deep sea fishing and eco wildlife trips to scenic naval hourbour trips and river cruises. Our favourite is steamin up the wooded valleys of the Tamar river to Calstock where the fillmed the Victorian Farm series in nearby Morwhellam Quay.
