Princes Farm holiday cottage history

The holiday cottage is part of a farmhouse dating back to 1650.

Down Thomas is a strange Devonshire name at first read but, it derives from Doune Thomas translated as Thomas’s Hill, considering we are on a ridge near the Devon coast that seems to make sense. A Mr Prynne was the land owner around the mid 1600s hence; Prynnes’s Farm -  now Princes Farm.

The the holiday cottage was a grain store and we call it Princes Granary was just that, a grain store upstairs and apple store downstairs.  When we arrived it had been used as a workshop store and a family of bunnies had taken residence downstairs. You’ll be pleased to know they have since vacated the premises!
